On day 12 of our Canadian Territories camping trip we were still camping and exploring Wood Buffalo National Park. We continued to see buffalo and black bears throughout the day as we drove around the park. After lunch we hiked the Benchmark Creek Trail. The day was already pretty warm so we couldn't go as far as we would have liked and the bugs were pretty bad (they love the warmer weather). The trail was fantastic and I wish we had more time to explore and document it. The young forest was lovely but the view of the flats were out of this world. As you left the forest you came out onto a salt flat and small erratic boulders. It looked like the surface of Mars or some other distant planet. The recent rains made it impossible for us to walk out onto the flats.
This park has so much to offer in regards to scenery, vistas, variety and wildlife. We both hope to come back in the future, maybe later in the season, to properly explore and experience it.
