Newly released bodycam footage shows a Southwest Airlines pilot being arrested and removed from a flight for allegedly attempting to fly while under the influence.

The video, released by Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, captures the January encounter with pilot David Allsop, whose FAA certification was reportedly revoked about two months after the incident.

Allsop was minutes away from piloting a flight from Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport to Chicago Midway International Airport when officers confronted him around 6 am on January 15.

In the footage, the officer, identified as Josiah Best, asks Allsop when he last consumed alcohol. Allsop replies that he drank the night before. When pressed about the amount, he initially says “a few beers,” but avoids giving a definitive number.

Best then asks if Allsop would consent to field sobriety tests. Allsop first refuses, saying “there’s no need,” prompting Best to respond, “I can smell an odor consistent with an alcoholic beverage.”

Allsop eventually agrees to the tests, starting with tracking the tip of a moving pen.

According to a police report sent to Storyful, Allsop failed to follow the tip with his eyes only. He was also given a walking-and-turning test and a one-leg stand test, during which officers noted he “swayed” and failed to maintain balance.

When asked to submit to a blood test, Allsop declined. Officers then placed him under arrest, citing visible signs of impairment and his refusal to take the test.
