STORYLINE
US and Kenyan sailors were undergoing weapons drills on Thursday on board the American guided missile destroyer USS Arleigh Burke.
The ship was in the Indian Ocean after leaving Mombasa, in Kenya, and was about 100 nautical miles (115.16 miles; 185.2 kilometres) from the Seychelles, its next port of call.
The Arleigh Burke has been taking part in a training mission for the African Partnership Station (APS), an international initiative involving the US Navy, the US Coast Guard and European naval forces aimed at improving maritime safety and security.
Training alongside the US crew were a number of Kenyan naval officers.
The sailors fired the ship's five-inch gun, a variety of machine guns and used practise torpedoes.
Commander Brian Moum, Captain of the Arleigh Burke, said it was essentially a qualification shoot "so that if I have to put them on an armed watch, using a .50 calibre machine gun for example, that they've had the experience of loading the gun, clearing the gun, firing the gun and just putting rounds down range so they know what it feels like."
APS was set up in response to requests by African nations for military-to-military or civilian-military maritime training.
Somalia, which neighbours Kenya, has long been a lawless, war-torn country and the waters off its coast are now the world's worst piracy hotspot.
There have been dozens of ship hijackings by Somali pirates, disrupting shipping in the busy Gulf of Aden.
NATO now has five warships on anti-piracy patrol in the region and similar operations are being carried out by the European Union and nations including the United States, China, Russia and India.
