Figs – as well as the delectable fruit, a fig tree produces lots of leaves – and these are edible too. They have a nutty, coconut flavour. The leaves contain latex so are not suitable for those with allergies; it’s best to avoid getting it on skin as it can be an irritant. Wash leavesand either dry or cook the leaves. You can even add a leaf to a pot or rice or use the leaves to wrap cheese.

Pumpkin leaves are also edible. Young leaves can be added to salads and older leaves that are too prickly to eat raw can be added to stews.

Kohlrabi and broccoli leaves are great too. You can eat them at any age, but they’re sweetest when young. Even when your broccoli plant is going to seed you you can still keep the plant going and harvest the leaves and small flower shoots that are still appearing.

Dahlias are known for their stunning flowers but you can also eat the petals – and the tubers that grow under the ground. The flavour depends on the cultivar – some are bitter and some taste like celery or carrot. Select the biggest tubers for a chance of finding a winner!

Parsley – the whole plant is edible. Allow it to go to seed and save some for your next crop and some for your spice rack. You can use the seedheads whole in cups of tea or you can grind the seeds up for a quick flavour hit. The stems and cleaned roots are great additions to the stock pot.

You can harvest coriander roots and seeds in the same way, too.
