Of the four Evangelists, St Luke is the best at drawing descriptions of individual personalities. He probably owes his reputation as an artist to this characteristic. He was Born in Antioch, Syria (modern-day Antakya, Turkey), Luke was a Gentile and a Greek-speaking physician by profession. Though he never met Jesus personally, Luke became a Christian—likely through the ministry of St. Paul, who refers to him as the beloved physician” Luke accompanied Paul on several missionary journeys and remained with him during his final imprisonment in Rome.

Luke’s literary contributions form nearly a quarter of the New Testament. The Gospel of Luke Emphasizes God’s mercy, universal salvation, and care for the marginalized—especially women, the poor, and sinners. Unique parables include The Prodigal Son, The Good Samaritan, The Rich Man and Lazarus and Contains the most detailed Infancy Narrative, including the Annunciation, Visitation, and Magnificat. The Acts of the Apostles Chronicles the birth and expansion of the early Church, Highlights the work of Peter, Paul, and the Holy Spirit, includes “we passages,” indicating Luke’s presence during key events.

Tradition holds that Luke was also a painter, and some legends claim he painted the first icon of the Virgin Mary. His Gospel’s vivid storytelling and sensitivity to human emotion have earned him the title “Evangelist of Beauty”. He is often depicted with a winged ox, symbolizing sacrifice and service. Tradition says he died at age 84 in Thebes, Greece, possibly as a martyr.
