Dark Domains is a worker placement game in which each player takes on the role of a city leader, working diligently to expand the king’s empire. However, unbeknownst to monarchy, the city leaders are secretly evil and have vowed their allegiance to a sinister Necromancer with morbid ambitions. Whoops. And so, to give the facade of increasing the domain of the royal family, players gather resources and construct pleasant civic buildings. But, as mentioned, this is but a ruse, and each of these helpful structures will eventually be tainted by the player that constructed them, converting them into a bastion of villainy that serves their dark overlord.

The more evil the section of the kingdom controlled by the player becomes, the more it will need to be defended against do-gooding adventurers who are questing along the landscape - looking for wrongs to right and evil to vanquish. In the end, only the player who develops a Domain that produces the most evil will accomplish their mission and win the favor of the vile Necromancer. They’ll do this through the strategic use of minions, henchmen, monsters, and magic spells to stamp out the good, repel the altruistic adventurers, and cover their land in darkness.

I recently played Dark Domains, and found it to be a game with some interesting twists on the worker placement genre. But those twists did not come without challenges. Here's my thoughts on my first plays of the game...
