The Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) carried out a surprise raid at the vending zone near SCB Medical College’s Mangalabag Gate, destroying quintals of stale and adulterated food, officials said.

A joint team of the CMC Health Department, Food Safety Team, State Drug Squad and police inspected two hotels and seized large quantities of food items including rice, curry, eggs and salad. Officials alleged that bleaching was detected in the food, following which both hotels were sealed.

Authorities also warned hotel owners for cooking food in unhygienic conditions over a drain. During the same operation, teams along with Drug Department officials inspected medicine shops in the area and issued warnings to outlets operating without valid licences or registered pharmacists.

Officials said the raid was conducted after receiving information about the sale of stale food in the vending zone, adding that cooking near the medical college was prohibited and traders had been warned earlier. Some traders protested during the operation, calling the action baseless and attributing food contamination to dust from heavy traffic.

The administration maintained that the action was necessary in the interest of public health and said similar raids would continue.
