Markus 15 tells the story of the crucifixion of Christ. A major theme in the chapter is Jesus as the Christ, the Messiah, King of the Jews. The theme is presented with irony; it is a paradox that the King dies. To the audience of Mark, this paradox contains the gospel: Jesus could have come down from the cross, and His death was voluntary - it was a sacrifice. This paradox raises the question: why did Jesus choose to die? Dr. Paul Petersen briefly touches on the three major models of explanation given in Scripture: the forensic, commercial, and sacrificial language, thus highlighting som of the major purposes of the death of Christ.
