A little orchestral arrangement for the classic "Elemental Stars" theme from Golden Sun.

➤ Analysis:

The track opens, and largely remains in, E Dorian modality (E-F#-G-A-B-C#-D-E), giving it an ancient aesthetic. To decorate this mode, we have two echoing celestas outlining a shimmering ostinato passage contained within a perfect 5th (0:02). The addition of the harp material is what alludes to E Dorian with the presence of a “D” (although the characteristic “C#” is still absent).

We then get our first melodic line with a delicate flute (0:13), again outlining E Dorian or E Aeolian through its use of an F# and D. The oboe responds to this opening phrase (0:23), finally with the appearance of the E Dorian “C#” note which gives the track its modal essence.

Then the voices and strings appear (0:33), floating around the celesta ostinato and decorating it with major 7th and minor 9th dissonances, respectively in C major and A minor, now no longer in E Dorian. This voice passage ends with an interesting modal chord of D on top of a pedal E, marking the shift to the next section which similarly pivots around E and D.

With this new section, we progress seamlessly into a 5/8 time signature (divided 221) and a new celesta ostinato (0:54). Then the voice returns with a gorgeous melodic phrase in E minor (1:03). The flutes echo this phrase at 1:20, before we return to the opening at 1:36, with the prior material slowly fading into a delicate silence.

I was more reserved and faithful to the original since it is such an iconic theme, with the only big changes being the addition of the 5ths at the first voice entry, and the octave doubling during the last phrase.

I couldn't decide between using panpipes or a regular flute for the opening melody. Here I ultimately kept it as panpipes (to be more faithful to the original), but the option for flute substitution is there.
