Union Shipping and Ports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced in the Lok Sabha that 13 mega projects worth Rs. 2,483 crore have been taken up in the state of Andhra Pradesh under the Sagarmala scheme.
Replying to questions raised by several members, he said that out of the total seven projects, work on seven projects worth Rs. 1,114 crore has already been completed.

He explained that the completed works include the modernization of Kakinada Anchorage Port at a cost of Rs. 85.83 crore, the construction of a coastal berth at Visakhapatnam Port at a cost of Rs. 43 crore, the construction of a road connecting Visakhapatnam Port at a cost of Rs. 46.34 crore, the expansion of a two-lane road into a four-lane road at a cost of Rs. 77 crore in the second phase, the establishment of a Maritime Shipbuilding Centre of Excellence at a cost of Rs. 574 crore, and the construction of Juvvaladinne Fishing Harbour at Nellore at a cost of Rs. 288 crore. He said that the work of six other projects is in various stages.

The important ones are Budagatlapalem Fishing Harbour at Rs. 386 crore, Kothapatnam Fishing Harbour at Rs. 364 crore, Fishing Harbour at Pudimadaka at Rs. 387 crore, Visakhapatnam Fishing Harbour modernization at Rs. 152 crore, coastal berth construction at Biyyapu Thippa at Rs. 73 crore, etc. The Minister revealed that commercial exports through non-major ports in the state (other than Visakhapatnam Port) have increased from 88 million tonnes to 118 million tonnes in three years.

He explained that while 88 million tonnes of goods were exported from the non-major ports of Gangavaram, Kakinada Gateway Port, Kakinada Anchorage Port and Krishnapatnam ports in the state in 2021-22, it increased to 118 million tonnes in the financial year 2023-24, while exports from the major port of Visakhapatnam increased from 69 million tonnes to 81 million tonnes during the same period.
