Thousands Feared Dead As Cyclone Chido Devastates Mayotte

Several hundred people are feared dead after Cyclone Chido struck Mayotte with winds of 140 mph (225 km/h).

Mayotte, one of France’s poorest territories located between Madagascar and Mozambique with 300,000 residents, has been left devastated by the storm.

A French Red Cross worker reported that “most of the slums have been totally destroyed,” and a local resident said he saw “an entire neighbourhood disappear.”

The Mayotte central hospital has suffered extensive damage and flooding, with French health minister Geneviève Darrieussecq confirming mobile medical services being set up.

This is the worst cyclone to hit Mayotte in 90 years, with eight metre high waves destroying homes and slums.

The island’s prefect estimates the death toll could even reach “close to a thousand or even several thousand.”
