Breaking Down The 2nd Stage Permanent Partner Visa Application Process


In this video our principal immigration lawyer, Martin Salvo, breaks down what it means to submit a combined 2 stage combined Partner visa application, when couples can expect to become eligible for their permanent residency, things to do post-approval, and much more!

1:55 - Average processing times for Australian Partner visas seem to be around the 3-6 month range, depending on various factors.


3:41 - To be eligible for a 'dual/double' grant of your partner visa, you would need to satisfy one of the following:


1. Have been in a 'long term relationship' before applying; or
2. It has been 2+ years since you made you initial combined partner visa application


5:26 - A long-term relationship is defined to be, either, 3 years as a defacto or married couple prior to applying (or 2 years if you also have a child of the relationship).


6:54 - Assuming you only received your temporary partner visa first, you can expect to hear from the DHA around 23 months from your application inviting you to apply for your permanent stage application.


9:34 - The DHA will generally want to reassess your relationship before granting you your permanent 2nd stage partner visa (i.e. your permanent residency).


10:34 - My suggestion to everyone is to keep accumulating their relationship evidence after the approval of their temporary partner visa, so that they will be ready when the time comes to provide updated documents for their 2nd stage permanent applications.


11:25 - Your permanent 2nd stage partner visa application is the smaller brother to your initial 1st stage application. It is just about showing you are still together and updating your relationship evidence.
