The song peaked at #2 on Billboard’s US Hot 100 and was certified Gold in 1971 and Platinum in 2017. It remains one of John Denver’s most beloved songs, selling over 1.6 million digital copies in the United States.

The song is considered a symbol of West Virginia, officially adopted as one of the state’s four anthems in 2014. Danoff and Nivert were inspired while driving along Clopper Road in Maryland, reflecting on their experiences growing up in New England. Lyrics like “The radio reminds me of my home far away” reference Denver’s childhood listening to Saturday Night Jamboree on WWVA in West Virginia.
