Vergil Ortiz Jr. (born March 25, 1998) is an American professional boxer. He has held the World Boxing Council (WBC) interim super welterweight title since August 2024.
As an amateur, he was a seven-time national champion and won the 110 pounds category at the USA's Junior Olympic National Championships in 2013. He was named the 2019 Prospect of the Year by The Ring magazine. Ortiz is known for his exceptional punching power, having scored all but one of his wins by knockout.
Israil Madrimov (born February 16, 1995) is an Uzbek professional boxer. He held the World Boxing Association (WBA) light-middleweight title in 2024. As an amateur, he won a silver medal in the welterweight division at the 2014 Asian Games and gold in the middleweight division at the 2018 edition.
Vergil Ortiz Jr will take on Israil Madrimov in Spring 2025 Riyadh. The fight would be scheduled for 12 rounds in the Super Welterweight division, which means the weight limit would be 154 pounds (11 stone or 69.8 kg).
This fight will appear on the undercard of Artur Beterbiev's and Dmitry Bivol's clash for the IBF World Light Heavyweight, WBC World Light heavyweight and WBO World Light heavyweight championship. Also on the undercard will be Daniel Dubois' and Joseph Parker's fight for the IBF World Heavyweight belt, Shakur Stevenson's and Floyd Schofield's fight for the WBC World Lightweight title, Carlos Adames' and Hamzah Sheeraz's fight for the WBC World Middleweight championship, Joshua Buatsi's and Callum Smith's contest, and Zhilei Zhang's and Agit Kabayel's bout for the WBC Interim World Heavyweight championship.
Vergil Ortiz Jr would step into the ring with an undefeated record of 22 wins, zero losses, and 0 draws, 21 of those wins coming by way of knockout.
Israil Madrimov would make his way to the ring with a record of 10 wins, 1 loss and 1 draw, with 7 of those wins by knockout.
The stats suggest Ortiz Jr would have a large advantage in power over Madrimov, boasting a 95% knockout percentage compared to Madrimov's 70%. Vergil Ortiz Jr is the younger man by 3 years, at 26 years old. Ortiz Jr has a height advantage of 1 inch over Madrimov. This also extends to a 1-inch reach advantage. Both Vergil Ortiz Jr and Israil Madrimov fight out of an orthodox stance.
Ortiz Jr is currently arguably the more experienced fighter, having had 10 more fights, and made his debut in 2016, 2 years and 3 months earlier than Madrimov, whose first professional fight was in 2018. He has fought 3 fewer professional rounds, totaling 83 compared to Madrimov's 86. Vergil Ortiz Jr goes into the fight ranked number 5 by The Ring at super welterweight.
Israil Madrimov is currently ranked number 4 by the WBA, 3 by the WBC, 10 by the WBO, and 2 by The Ring in the 154lb division. Israil Madrimov will go straight into a fight against Vergil Ortiz Jr without having to face Serhii Bohachuk.
The former WBA super welterweight champion had an unenviable task on his hands beginning with Bohachuk, 24-2 (23 KOs), on December 21. And had Madrimov, 10-1-1 (7 KOs), won, it would have left him with nine weeks to recover, train and prepare for Ortiz Jr, 22-0 (21 KOs), on February 22.
After the reveal of the February 22 card – headlined by Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol – earlier this week fans wondered if Madrimov would in fact fight on both occasions. We were led to believe that he would and that there appeared to be no problem on Madrimov’s side despite two tough looking fights in a short space of time. However, last night Turki Alalshikh revealed on X that Madrimov would not be fighting Bohachuk.
