Aloha mai kākou! I recently had the honor of attending an incredible hula presentation by Unulau, a renowned hālau hula under the direction of Kumu Hula Pele Kaio. This powerful Hula Kahiko took place on Saturday, March 9th at the Volcano Art Center Gallery within Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.
Unulau masterfully promotes knowledge and education, fostering a profound connection to the environment and spirituality through their graceful movements and chants.
The outdoor kahua hula provided a breathtaking setting. Audience members were fully immersed in this cultural treasure, despite the unpredictable weather.
As Unulau took the stage, their precise footwork, intricate hand gestures, and powerful chants commanded our full attention and respect. Each dancer moved with palpable spiritual power, transporting us through stories of Hawaiian history and reverence for the sacred lands.
My heartfelt gratitude goes out to Unulau, Kumu Hula Pele Kaio, the Volcano Art Center, and all those who made this free event possible - including vital support from the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. Experiences like this strengthen our appreciation for the indigenous arts and cultural heritage preservation.
