Lily loved animals. Not fluffy kittens or playful puppies, mind you, but the kind that lurked in the shadows, slithered through the grass, and hooted under the full moon. She devoured books about bats, spiders, and owls, filling her room with plastic fangs and rubber claws.
One stormy night, as the wind howled outside, Lily woke with a jolt. A low scratching sound came from beneath her bed. Heart pounding, she reached for her flashlight. The beam sliced through the darkness, revealing a pair of glowing eyes staring back at her. But before she could scream, the eyes vanished.
Night after night, the scratching returned. Then came the whispers, like dry leaves rustling in the wind. Lily started seeing things in the corners of her eyes - fleeting glimpses of furry paws, spindly legs, and feathery wings. Sleep became a terrifying adventure, her room a haunted menagerie.
One night, determined to face her fears, Lily grabbed her flashlight and crept under the bed. The air was thick with a musky scent. As she shone the light around, she gasped. There, huddled in the shadows, were not monsters, but a tiny field mouse, a shivering spider, and a lost owl chick.
Relief washed over Lily, followed by a surge of sympathy. These creatures weren't trying to scare her; they were just scared themselves. She gently coaxed them out, finding them a cozy corner in her room with milk, seeds, and a warm box.
That night, instead of whispers and scratches, Lily heard soft chirps, purrs, and the rustle of tiny paws. The storm raged on outside, but inside, Lily felt safe and content, surrounded by her new, unexpected friends. The midnight menagerie wasn't so scary after all, just a little misunderstood
