The first edition of Camões’ Renaissance epic, Os Lusiadas, published in 1572, is one of the many treasures held in Wadham's rich library collection.
Cláudia Pazos Alonso (Professor of Portuguese and Gender, Wadham College) and Simon Park (Associate Professor in Medieval and Renaissance Portuguese , St Anne’s) discuss this 450-year-old European masterpiece and its narration of Vasco da Gama’s sea voyage to India.
They explore Camões’ relationship with empire, while also considering some of the moments that resist a unified view of European colonial history in the making.
