In the Fall of 1997 the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory hosted a ground-breaking and controversial lecture series titled “God and Computers: Minds, Machines, and Metaphysics.” Ten talks were given by a broad range of experts in computer science, cognitive science or A.I.; they accompanied an award-wining course in the EECS Department being taught by Dr. Anne Foerst, a Lutheran minister and post-doc at the A.I. Lab (6.915, “God and Computers”). Among other themes, speakers considered the ways in which their work intersected with spiritual and philosophical questions, and how the dialogue between computer science and technology might be expanded.

The concluding lecture in the series was delivered by Rosalind W. Picard SM ’86, DSc ‘91, NEC Development Professor of Computers and Communications and Associate Professor of Media Technology at the MIT Media Lab, on Dec. 10, 1997. In her talk titled “Toward Machines That Can Deny Their Maker,” Prof. Picard reviews highlights from her recent research into affective computing and emotional intelligence. She concludes her presentation with an audio recording of a dialogue she wrote, inspired by the 1920 science fiction play “R.U.R.” by Karel Capek (renowned for having first introduced the word “robot”), through which she offers more personal reflections on her religious and philosophical thoughts and feelings.
