Описание к видео BUDAPEST - Matthias Church

The Church of the Assumption of the Buda Castle, more commonly known as the Matthias Church, is located in front of the Fisherman's Bastion at the heart of Buda's Castle District. According to the tradition, the first church on the site was founded by Saint Stephen, King of Hungary. The current building was constructed in the florid late Gothic style in the second half of the 14th century and was extensively restored in the late 19th century. It was the second largest church of medieval Buda and the seventh largest church of the medieval Hungarian Kingdom. It is a historic building with an important history. The last two Kings of Hungary were crowned within its walls: Franz Joseph I of Hungary, and Charles IV of Hungary . The church reached its peak in medieval prosperity during the reign of king Matthias Corvinus. The king built the southwest bell tower, one of the finest pieces of Gothic architecture in Hungary. During the first Turkish invasion in 1526, the medieval roof structure and most of its equipment were destroyed. In 1541 the rebuilt Church of the Blessed Virgin was converted into a mosque by the Turks after the final conquest of Buda; in this church the Sultan Suleiman gave thanks to Allah for the victory. After Buda was retaken (1686), the church first became the property of the Franciscans, and then of the Jesuit Order, which restored it in Baroque style. In 1690 the Palatine of Hungary Paul I, Prince Esterházy built the new Baroque main altar, and in 1696 built a lobby in front of the main gate. Under the leadership of the king Franz Joseph I of Austria, between 1874 and 1896, a major rebuilding took place, under the architect Frigyes Schulek, which restored the original image of the building. The stone carving was done by Jakab Kauser, a well-known family of architects from Pest. The church was restored to its original 13th-century plan. Most of the exterior of Matthias Church was added around 1896 in a Gothic style. The interior is decorated with works by two outstanding 19th-century Hungarian painters, Károly Lotz and Bertalan Székely. The wall left of the entrance represents the Renaissance, while the wall across from the entrance has Eastern motifs to represent Ottoman rule.
Saint Emeric Chapel. The chapel was built in the 19th century with the financial support of the Zichy family. On the altar of the chapel the statue of Saint Emeric stands between the statues of Saint Stephen and Saint Gerard. Mihály Zichy painted the cardinal events of the eponymous saint’s life on the wings. On the chapel’s western wall murals depicting St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of Ferenc Zichy, the donator, were painted.
Holy Trinity Chapel . On the chapel’s altar a special Holy Trinity representation, the Throne of Grace is depicted. The 15th-century triptych originates from the church of Felsőerdőfalva (today Stará Lesná, territory of Slovakia), and arrived in the Main Church of Buda Castle in the 19th century. In 1898 the tomb of King Béla III and his wife, Anne of Châtillon, was also placed in this chapel.
Saint Ladislaus Chapel Saint Ladislaus Chapel is situated opposite the lamb window, next to the sanctuary. The important legends of the knight-king’s life and the miraculous events related to his name after his death were painted by Károly Lotz on the chapel’s walls. On the wall above the altar portraits of King Ladislaus, Béla III, who initiated the canonization, and Pope Celestin III, who canonized the saint are depicted. The replica of the Saint Ladislaus’ head reliquary preserved in Győr was also placed on the altar.
Loreto Chapel. (Not shown in the video) The chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Loreto is located at the bottom of the bell tower, right from the main gate. The chapel’s rich ornamentation features symbols of the Virgin Mother. In the central panel of the triptych stands the 17th century replica of the statue of Our Lady of Loreto. The rose motif appearing on the windows and the gate bars of the church's most ornate chapel also symbolizes Mary.
The Main Altar. The church’s main altar stands in the central axis of the elongated polygonal sanctuary. On the historicist structure of the altar dedicated to the Virgin Mother both Romanesque and Gothic style elements can be discovered. The altar’s central figure is Virgin Mary appearing in a halo.
