The church of Santa Maria Maggiore, Ronda (Malaga province, Spain), raised to the status of collegiate by King Ferdinand, stands on the old mosque of the city, the work of XIII century which still preserved remains of the mihrab. The start of construction of this church due to take place soon after the reconquest in 1486 the square by Christian troops; and in it two different architectural styles are distinguished according to the different stages through which it passed its execution over more than two centuries that lasted the works. Thus belonging to Gothic, part basically corresponds to the foot of the temple and marks the final configuration of the church. This consists of three separated by pointed arches resting on pillars run fasciculados capital ships. They are very open arches that form a large open space interrupted only by the body of the choir located in the center of the church, equipped with carved wooden chairs with figures of saints in the backs and great lectern in the center. This part is initially covered with wood paneling, but currently has hemispherical domes on pendentives decorated with cartouches, seventeenth century work. The second part or modern part is the head of the church and replaces the previously existing destroyed by an earthquake in 1580. This circumstance made it possible for reconstruction was carried out with a new, monumental architecture, now in Mannerist style; and even won height from the Gothic part in a series of works that did not end until about 1720. The new work continues the old scheme, a joint plane in the last Gothic pillars to which they are adosan others with fluted columns high base that contained a simple first triumphal arch with imperial shield in the key and then continue up finishing in bright Corinthian capitals collecting an entablature with frieze decorated with cartouches and very cornice. The high altar has an altarpiece from the late eighteenth century made of unpainted wood columns and balustrade topped with a flashlight. Its outer projecting its original facade on the feet where the tower, a magnificent piece made of brick and square base with octagonal upper bodies topped by Gothic tracery with pinnacles at the angles and cupola of the sixteenth century is located. It rises after the destruction in 1523 of the former by lightning on ancient minaret of the mosque, and she is attached to it in the early seventeenth century, a triple gallery enabled to allow viewing of the shows that were held in the great square that faces the. Of the three floors of the gallery, the ground floor is formed by a semicircular arch made of brick on fine Tuscan columns of high base; while the upper two are lintels, also with stone columns, being topped by a tiled roof with steeper than we now possess. Cultural Interest, the Santa María la Mayor Ronda is listed as a monument, and so is published in the Gaceta de Madrid in 1931.
