Flamingos are kind of weird looking birds with many unique features, their bill though is one of the strangest adaptations they have, which allows them to filter feed. They use their bill upside down, which is unlike other birds. Water is sucked in through the front, then flows out the sides. The bill and tongue is lined by hair-like lamellae, which catch algae and crustaceans from the muddy water. Pigments in the food called carotenoids then get broken down in the liver, and end up causing the feathers to turn pink!
