🌱How Do You Link Fishing Cat Conservation to Healthy Wetlands and Human Sustenance?🌱

On World Wetland Day 2024, the launch of Chilika Red Rice was announced. This a pilot project by The Fishing Cat Project and HEAL is proud to partner it alongside Veeville Consulting.

The theme of this year's #worldwetlandsday was 'Wetlands and Human Well Being', which the Chilika Red Rice project perfectly embodies.

💧The red rice is a naturally farmed monsoon rice from Chilika's wetlands that is cultivated without pesticide or fertilizer usage. The rice is adapted to increase in height with the floodwaters or inundation levels and grows to heights of 4 to 6 feet. This simulates the Fishing Cat's habitat and it thus provides seasonal refuge to our favourite cat.

💧However, these traditional crops are being converted to intensive aquaculture. This is because the rice farmers get very little economic return from selling this rice locally. Additionally, the intensive aquaculture releases untreated wastewater directly into Chilika's channels affecting fish populations heavily.

We initiated a pilot project to promote the red rice in cities.
If adequate amounts are bought by citizens
🐾the farmers would get much higher economic rates and might be discouraged to lease out their lands for intensive aquaculture.
🐾Simultaneously, it will benefit the indigenous wildlife populations including the wetland ambassador, Fishing Cat, and a cohort of wetland wildlife.
🐾Additionally, women SHGs are involved in the traditional processing of this rice. Therefore you would be supporting these groups too 🙂
🐾Last but not the least, red rice is health food !
