Investing From the Top Down: A Macro Approach

I'm going to give you two perspectives here; one from a fundamental side, one from a technical side. In summary, top down analysis is taking a massive, broad overview of everything and then drilling down, narrower and narrower until you're making a decision based fundamentals or technicals.

Fundamentals - first we look at what the global economy is faring (where is the boom or growth and opportunities), second we look at the macro trends themes, thirdly we look at sectors like food or services and finally we analyse individual stocks.

Technicals - starting from Weekly to daily to Hourly down to 5 minute. Here you are looking to trade the trend using top down analysis.
