The litter is not only ugly to look at, but it is also harmful to people's health. However, there is an alternative. Mexican inventers Leopoldo Benítez and Paola Garro are trying to change the way people look at cigarette butts in the nation's capital.

Ecofilter is a project that aims to collect discarded cigarette butts and turn them into other products. Though small in size, cigarette butts cause a huge amount of damage to the environment. In fact, a ton of cigarette butts is equivalent to 14 trees.
When collecting the waste, they take precautionary measures, as cigarette filters are made from a material designed to capture the carcinogenic substances in cigarettes, which emit toxic gases such as ammonia and substances.

In the lab, cigarette butts are treated by introducing a microorganism that secretes enzymes which detoxify and degrade cigarette butts over the course of 15 days. At the end of the process, the transformed cellulose pulp looks a lot like cotton.

Once the process is finished, the pulp is molded to create a wide variety of common objects.
