How To Keep People From Leaving Your Organization

As a leader, you do your best to hire the best people, train them, and then keep them. But if that’s all you do: recruit, hire, train, and keep, then you’re missing the bigger picture.

If your people feel like they are viewed as a means to an end…if they feel like you care more about the bottom line than you do about them…if they lack commitment, joy, and excitement about the work you’ve invited them to do…then you didn’t do your job as a leader.

As a leader, you are called to influence people. Part of your influence involves developing people. You’ve probably thought, If I develop people…if I invest in them…they will leave me. That might be true. But what if you don’t develop people? Then they will undoubtedly leave you.

What’s a leader to do? Do you risk training, developing, and investing in people knowing that they might leave you someday for a better job or do you do your best to keep them right where they are?

Do you want to lead people who feel empowered, valued, and committed to you or do you want people who are just there to collect a paycheck until the next opportunity comes along?

In today’s message, Pastor Terry Linscott explores the purpose of developing people.

Discover the truth about how developing people builds within them a sense of community, a sense of loyalty, and a desire to support you in whatever you do. In that environment, your people become your greatest asset because they are committed to the success of the organization, they are bought in, and they will help you do what you are called to do.

Two mentalities: The Boss Mentality vs. The Leader Mentality

Leadership is about influencing people to become a better version of themselves.

We see potential in all people.

God put potential inside all of us.

Excellent leaders have a common belief in human potential. Everyone has the potential to be great in whatever position they are in. With everything you do, do it unto the Lord. As we bring glory to Him and exalt Him, He will exalt us.

Great leaders and managers believe in their people. Because they believe in their people and what their people have the potential to achieve, they set a higher bar for them. The higher the expectation, the higher the performance.

Our job is to set a higher expectation of those following us because we know their potential is greater than what they are doing now.

Developing people does not eliminate my own personal development.

We must be interested in developing ourselves before we take an interest in developing others.

Release pressure of keeping people where they are.

Develop people to become better than I am.

Become a better version of myself every day.

8:35 Why should I invest in people if they might leave?

When you invest in people, they will begin to become part of the community. They will take ownership, they will feel connected, and they will become an integral part of what you are doing.

When you invest, you change their thought process. They become a support to you.

Their longevity is in how you invest in them.

• You give them a sense of ownership.
• You’re creating a succession plan.
• You’re stretching yourself when you stretch somebody else.
• Improves your overall organization.
o Attitudes change.
o Atmosphere changes.
• When you invest in people, when you develop people, you attract more people.

Many people never reach their potential because of their mindset and because there is no one taking interest to invest in them.

To become who we are supposed to be, we need leaders in our lives to help pull the potential out of us.

16:51 Four Key Principles for Developing People

• Demonstrate interest in them and not just their work.
o Don’t be afraid to get personal. Know their name, kids’ names, likes, desires, etc.
 When people know you care about them, they will give you their life.
 When people know you only care about the bottom line, they will give you their time.
• Add value to them and don’t take advantage of them.
o Lend a hand when you can and where you can.
o Be an ear for them to speak to.
o Lead by example, show them how to do it, don’t just tell them.
o Be present while you are present.
• Capitalize on their strengths and strengthen the weaknesses
• Stretch them in their personal leadership. (Even if they don’t think they are leaders.)
o Help them discover the things that are already inside of them and help them draw it out.

Persist until something happens. Keep pushing your people until something happens in their life.
