What we mean by listening, and authority. Is listening the same as obeying? Is listening the same as believing? Does the entitlement to belief and obedience result from a presumed level of authority? Who owns your thoughts? Does listening mean listening to dissenting views enough to understand what an intelligent person would find cogent in those views? Or does it mean letting one group frame the narrative, "listening" as an act of religious faith, in which all views that stray from the dogma are heretical?

Where does the idea that you will be tricked into believing something by listening to it come from? Probably from someone who A) was a liar B) didn't listen, and/or C) who heard the truth but didn't like the changes that would inevitably have to be undertaken to bring their life into accordance with their own newly changed outlook.

You are no more in control of the thoughts that pop into your head than you are in control of the rest of this sentence. Notice that your thoughts arise regardless of their efficacy, and you are free to examine your thoughts for usefulness and for flaws. You are free to do the same for anything you hear.
