संजय लीला भंसाली की चर्चित फ़िल्म गंगूबाई काठियावाड़ी एक बार फिर सुर्खियों में है. ये फ़िल्म उस गंगूबाई की ज़िंदगी से प्रेरित है, जो 1960 के दशक में मुंबई के कमाठीपुरा में 'वेश्यालय' चलाती थीं. फ़िल्म 'माफ़िया क्वीन्स ऑफ मुंबई' नाम की किताब पर आधारित है, जिसे एस. हुसैन ज़ैदी और जेन बोर्गेस ने लिखी है. गंगूबाई का असली नाम गंगा हरजीवनदास काठियावाड़ी था. उनका जन्म गुजरात के काठियावाड़ में हुआ था और वो वहीं पलीं-बढ़ीं. 'माफ़िया क्वीन्स ऑफ मुंबई' के सह-लेखक एस. हुसैन ज़ैदी गंगूबाई के बारे में कई चीज़ें विस्तार से बताते हैं.
