NKP 765 Barking Through the Alleghenies-Chasing the Horseshoe Curve Special!

Описание к видео NKP 765 Barking Through the Alleghenies-Chasing the Horseshoe Curve Special!

On May 25-27, 2013, the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society, in conjunction with Norfolk Southern, hosted public excursions from Lewistown, PA-Gallitzin, PA and return (a total of over 300 miles). On this trip, passengers would get to travel through the beautiful Allegheny Mountains, around the world famous Horseshoe Curve, and through the Gallitzin tunnels. As an early graduation present, my dad took me to go chase the Berkshire for all three days, considering I would much rather see the locomotive up close and document the trip trackside rather than ride it. This mighty 2-8-4 was built by Lima in 1944, and as seen in the video, is still going strong, reaching a top speed of 55 mph on these excursions. NKP 765 isn't just some giant hunk of metal, it's nicknamed "400 tons of Americana", simply for the fact that hundreds of people, whether they like trains or not, came out to witness a steam locomotive coming through their hometowns which only see black and white diesels all day long. It's a "living" and "breathing" symbol of our country's rich history, and helps us all see the past a little clearer while in the locomotive's presence. Watch as we chase the Westbound deadhead move toward Lewistown, and then begin the chase "The Horseshoe Curve Special" across the Middle Division and the East/West Slopes of the NS Pittsburgh Line for Memorial Day weekend 2013. This trip wouldn't have been possible without the efforts of Norfolk Southern, the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society, my dad, and my friend Roman, whose online railfan guide helped me plan my chasing route. Enjoy!
