I stepped into the cathedral
The voices of thousands echoed
I stood in silence at the altar
You fought so hard
And I know you didn’t want to give up
But this was never your battle to win
I still remember the sound of your sword hitting the marble ground
How it shivered down my spine
As the metal rang among the pews
I saw the white flag rise from your breast plate
At first a cloth to catch your tears
Transformed into a white flag
In the end you knew the fight was over
You had nothing left to give
The elation as you fell to your knees
Where I met you
Held you in my arms
And told you it was all going to be okay
I thanked you
And as the love permeated your flesh
You took your final breaths
You turned to dust
All that remains are your ashes upon the altar



Kathryn Jayne is a UK-based Installation, Performance and Alchemical Artist. Their practice centred the soul’s journey through cycles of death and rebirth, honouring the body as a vessel for transmutation and sacred meaning-making. Jayne explores how people, place and found objects carry energetic imprints and echo’s of these cycles. Hold, 2026 is the culmination of Jayne’s exploration into the alchemical arts, baptism by fire. The movement is the embodiment of the catalyst moment in life when we are called to surrender our egoic selves at the altar. This “ego-death” is often loud, feeling like burning inside your chest and a heaviness too strong to hold. The artist invites the audience to let it burn, let it turn ash and create space for the new, the rebirth. From Hold comes the Release…
