This is a USN training film on the 8'" 55 caliber Mark 16 gun. With automatic shell handling and loading, a firing rate 3x greater than that of their predecessors, along with the use of "super-heavy" AP projectiles, these weapons made the Des Moines class the most powerful heavy cruisers ever built. They were one of the few large-caliber automatic gun designs that proved reliable in actual service, and they were still performing well during the Vietnam War, some 25 years after they first entered service.
