Krishna Janmashtami marks the birth of the Hindu deity Lord Krishna and the annihilation of the demon king Kamsa. Decorating their houses, homemakers offered sumptuous sweets and savories to Lord Krishna and prayed for health, wealth, and prosperity for themselves and their family members.

The eighth son of Devaki and Vasudeva, Krishna was born in a prison in Mathura, India, where his parents were imprisoned by his uncle Kamsa as a celestial voice warned Kamsa that his life would be taken by the eighth child of Vasudev and Devaki.

Janmashtami is the day when we celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna signifiesAnanda (bliss, pure happiness). We express happiness through celebration. So Janmashtami is celebrating the birth of Bliss. It is the day when that (divine) joy becomes manifest.

The verses in the Bhagavad Gita (a sacred book narrated by Lord Vishnu) say, that whenever there is a predominance of evil and a decline of religion, I will reincarnate to kill the evil and to save the good. The main significance of Janmashtami is to encourage goodwill and to discourage bad will.
