John Lavery (1856-1941) was an artist who lived through period of incredible change; born in the era of the horse and cart, and departing from a world dominated by the aeroplane, steamship and motorcar. These advances in modes of transport opened the world to Lavery and his contemporaries. Inter-continental travel became far easier, and Lavery continued to venture across the globe into his eighties. An Irish Impressionist | Lavery on Location looks at how travel, and the rigorous search for new and inspiring vistas shaped Lavery as an artist. In his lifetime he was principally known as a portrait painter, his ability to replicate the stylish men and women of the British upper classes with a freshness that was both flattering and fashionable made him appealing. He counted Royalty, political leaders, Hollywood celebrities, and stars of the stage among his clients. This film looks at Lavery’s life and the effect that his travels had on his work, revealing an artist who throughout his career remained dedicated to observing and recording the changing world around him.
