🔊🗣️ Of all the activities one can do with @NootkaMarineAdventures—e.g., wildlife tours and pedal kayaking—the biggest draw is #fishing. 🛥️🎣 And so, I paired up with my travel writing buddy @RobAnnis, and we took a boat with @Dave_NMA and Captain Dan, who brought us from #NewtonCoveResort to the open Pacific Ocean, albeit in an area sheltered by the coastal islands of #VancouverIsland’s western shore, where fish are aplenty.

We learned the ropes, nay, fishing lines, of deep sea fishing in these parts, where depths quickly go upwards of 100 ft. A line with a non-barbed hook and a squid-like lure is clipped the line of a heavy downrigger (sinker) that drags the bait down to a depth of your choosing, depending on what you’re going after. Using sonar, we searched for spots with schools of small bait fish—prime spots for bigger salmon to feed.

Fishing takes a lot of practice. It’s a game of luring a fish, maintaining a tension as you reel it in, in hopes that it’s one that’s legal to keep. We started our experience, mostly catching kelp, but as the day and weather progressed, we ultimately got the practice needed for actual fish. Rob landed a baby spring/Chinook/king #salmon—too small to keep. I managed to catch something bigger, and I learned to play the game of giving it slack and reeling it in to maintain a light tension—because the hook isn’t barbed for humane reasons and can easily slip out. However, the fish ultimately got away right as it was about to come aboard because the line snapped at the last second—my fault because I hadn’t given it enough slack at the end.
