Video Transcript:
Janina Fisher: How do we help our clients connect with and empathize with their parts, especially when there are protectors preventing emotional connection?

Frank Anderson: It's always a challenging problem. From the Internal Family Systems (IFS) perspective, one approach is to tap into the concept of self-energy, which refers to the internal resource and inherent wisdom that everyone possesses, even those who have experienced severe trauma. However, accessing this resource can be difficult and may take years.

As protectors become known, seen, and heard, typically by the therapist initially, they start to relax and feel safer. This allows the client's self-energy to gradually emerge. However, there can be a problem in the therapeutic relationship where parts feel abandoned or left by the self due to past trauma. This aspect is controversial within the IFS community because self-energy is generally viewed as something positive. However, parts can hold resentment and see the self as having abandoned them in difficult times.

Establishing a two-way street of trust and connection between the self and parts is challenging, given this contentious relationship. Parts often have a tumultuous and contentious relationship with the self, feeling that they were left to deal with the consequences of trauma alone. It's important to understand that the self, or essence, is always protected and doesn't intentionally leave. However, as a byproduct of trauma, parts may feel left behind.

Bringing the ability for clients to feel and be present with their traumatized parts is not an easy task. It requires patience, understanding, and a therapeutic process that allows for the gradual exploration and integration of these parts. It takes time to bridge the chasm created by trauma and establish a compassionate and connected relationship between the self and parts.
