The Miao Sisters’ Meal Festival: Chinese festival with roots in ancient matchmaking

On the hillsides of south China’s Guizhou Province, preparations are being made for a special occasion that only comes around once a year – the Miao Sisters’ Meal Festival, a sociable celebration with its roots in an ancient matchmaking event.

Each spring, people from villages in this rural area come together to sing, dance and take part in parades while wearing colourful traditional costumes. The celebration also has a hallmark dish: Sisters’ Rice, a dish of sticky rice dyed with natural colours into bright rainbow hues.
