Being able to control our audio levels inside Final Cut Pro X is extremely important. Regardless of the video we are creating there will most likely be times when we want our music, audio or sound effects to be louder or quieter. Using keyframes is a very efficient way in which we can make sure those changes are smooth and gradual.

There are a couple of techniques I use to create keyframes on my audio, music and sound effects in Final Cut Pro X:

1. We can always hover over our audio files, hold down the option key and click on the audio line to create keyframes

2. We can also use the range selection tool. All we need to do is hit the R key to turn our range selection on, select our range and then drag down on the audio line to automatically create 4 keyframes

3. Pro Tip: hold down the command key while you drag down or up on the audio line. This will help you have better control and it will allow you to quickly set your audio levels to where you want them

Something important to keep track of while we edit our audio files are the decibel rates. We can easily see our decibel rates by turning on our audio meter inside Final Cut Pro X. It is important to make sure we are not seeing red on the audio meter as we play through our project. Red means the audio is clipping. Clipping means the audio levels have gone above a certain decibel rate to where they are now distorted and corrupted. Green means there is no clipping and yellow is soft clipping. I personally try to avoid soft clipping, but some people like how it sounds.

I think a good decible rate to aim for as our maximum for Youtube videos is between -5 and -6 decibels.

Keyframes are an important part of video editing and they can be a great asset as we continue to improve as creators! Mostly importantly make sure YOU are satisfied with the results and keep believing in yourself!
