In 1969, under the ownership of British Leyland, the Mini was given a facelift by stylist Roy Haynes, who had previously worked for Ford. The restyled version was called the Mini Clubman, and has a squarer front, protruding some 10cm / 4in further forward. A more sporting model with the 1275cc single-carburettor engine, dubbed the 1275 GT, was slated as the replacement for the 998 cc Mini Cooper (the 1,275 cc Mini Cooper S continued alongside the 1275 GT for two years until 1971). The 1275 GT is often incorrectly described as the "Mini Clubman 1275 GT". The official name was always just the "Mini 1275 GT", and it was a separate, distinct model from the Clubman (although it shared the same frontal treatment as the Mini Clubman and was launched at the same time). The 1,275cc engine delivers a mere 59bhp, but thanks to a sharp throttle and short gearing the GT always felt eager on the move. It was finally discontinued and replaced by the Metro alternative.
The Mini 1275 T presented today was first registered on the 14th August 1978. We know she has had 7 owners from new and believed to have covered only 56,000 miles from new.
We do not know much from the early history of the car. However, in 2017, the car underwent a large restoration and performance upgrade. Having the original block re bored to 1380cc and fitted with a mk 3 cooper S 11 stud head. There are further details in the history file which are far too numerous to add here. In 2021 the car had a circa £3,000 of work carried out by "The Mini Works" company. The car comes with a Mini Cooper Register certificate confirming the modifications. It starts and drives. It appears to be cosmetically mint. We have seen no sign of mechanical issue (but the buyer should satisfy themselves that this is the case). Mini 1275 GTs are a rare thing. Circa only 180 remain on the road today, and one sold this year for £39,000. That makes this a snip. They are only going to get rarer, and few are this tidy.
