CRAZY WOODEN BRIDGES in Abra! Philippines Backdoor Motor Travel!

ABRA - a province named for the wide river valley at its centre.

And we're going to be following the river today - from Baguio, it's a familiar ride along the Halsema Highway then a descent into the valley at Mankayan. From Quirino, I turn on to a backdoor route descending steeply towards Tubo - and go from overview to being right in that gorge!

Today, I cross the Abra River 7 times, and say the words "Abra River" many more (no prizes for counting!) - seeing the small towns that make up this fascinating yet unexplored province.

I felt the energy of the province in a way I hadn't before - such an eye-opening trip - which culminated in meeting a lady from Ormoc, Leyte who had migrated to Abra two years ago and learnt to weave! And we spoke Bisaya!

Unfortunately the road for the last mountain leg of my trip was closed due to landslides, so I took the coastal route, crossing the Abra River for the final time and heading to a new province - Ilocos Norte!
