The Mexican islands are global biodiversity hotspots—home to one third of the world’s seabird species. But invasive species once pushed many colonies to the brink of extinction.

Now, nature is making a comeback. A 26-year island restoration effort has removed 60 invasive species and brought back 85% of lost seabird colonies. They aim to restore over 100,000 hectares across nearly 100 islands by 2030.

Comprehensive Island Restoration in Mexico has been recognized as a World Restoration Flagship under the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
