In this video, Dr. Praveen Kammar (Consultant Surgical Oncologist, SSO Hospital, Mumbai) will tell us about the causes of symptoms of large intestine & rectal cancer.

The causes of rectal cancer are divided into two types that are modifiable factors (which you can control) & non-modifiable factors (out of our control).

In certain cases, rectal cancer transmits due to familial or hereditary factors which are beyond our control. Other conditions such as Familial Adenomatous Polyposis, inflammatory bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis have a higher risk rate of having rectal cancer.

The factors that are in our control are obesity, sedentary lifestyle, alcohol, smoking, etc. With certain lifestyle modifications, it is possible to reduce the risk of large intestine & rectal cancer. Exercise daily and live an active lifestyle.

The symptoms of large intestine & rectal cancer are pretty much the same:
• Change in bowel habits, constipation, problem in passing gas.
• Blood in stool, change of stool colour.
• Intestinal obstruction
