Moscow mayor Yury Luzhkov rushed to the scene of a bomb blast in central Moscow on Tuesday night and immediately labelled the explosion a terrorist act.

He said he did not exclude a link with Chechen rebels and said the latest casualty figures were seven dead and 22 injured.

The bomb ripped through an underground walkway packed with hundreds of rush hour commuters and shoppers, killing at least seven people and injuring dozens.

Rescue workers treated badly injured people lying in the street, their clothes burned and shredded and covered in blood.

A second bomb found near the scene was defused.

Russian security forces have been on alert for possible attacks by Chechen separatists. August sixth was the fourth anniversary of the rebels' capture of the Chechen capital.

As yet, there has been no admission of responsibility for the bombing.

"Everyone now has to make an effort and raise their vigilance. The security forces are doing this. Of course, if ordinary Muscovites will help, then we will have a higher general level of security. Unfortunately, it's just impossible to exclude these kinds of situations."
