Somalia peacekeepers withdrawal: 2,000 African Union troops set to leave

Some African Union peacekeepers are set to withdraw from Somalia, with 2,000 troops expected to leave, half the original number planned. The withdrawal has been slowed following a Somali government request amid concerns over Al-Shabaab's resurgence. The peacekeeping mission is to withdraw completely by December, but the African Union aims to establish a new 12,000-strong contingent to replace it. Mohammed Hirmoge, a Somalia affairs analyst and former communications staffer at the office of the country's president, told Al Jazeera that the AU's 17-year peacekeeping mission has achieved little, despite the money and time allocated, as much of the country remains under insurgent control. Both sides face accusations of war crimes, and the withdrawal is seen as rushed and not based on results.
