Tensions flared in Pakistan as police fired tear gas and arrested more than 150 supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan during nationwide protests. The demonstrations marked two years since Khan’s imprisonment. In Karachi, PTI supporters took to the streets on bikes, rickshaws, and cars, waving party flags and chanting slogans. Lahore saw the highest number of arrests, with PTI claiming over 200 detentions, including overnight raids. Islamabad and Rawalpindi remained quiet but heavily policed, as the government continues its crackdown on Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. An anti-terror court recently sentenced over 100 PTI members, including top parliamentarians, to prison terms for their alleged role in the May 9, 2023 protests that targeted military installations.
