In this lecture, we look at the last years of the Roman Republic, starting with Caesar's consulship in 59 and going down to Octavian's final victory at Actium in 31 BCE. Political turbulence reached an all-time high as street gangs battled in Rome, the Senate House became a funeral pyre, and men who lacked the loyalty of a legion or two slipped into utter irrelevance.
