Jethro is hard at work digging the hole for Granny’s root cellar when he suddenly believes he’s struck oil. Excited, he runs to tell Jed, but Jed, already wealthy from his first oil strike, sees no need for more and orders the hole to be filled back in. Meanwhile, at the bank, Mr. Drysdale learns that one of the Commerce Bank secretaries, Candy Davis (Susan Hart), is competing for the title of Queen of Beverly Hills. When Margaret hears that the winner will receive a trip around the world, she sees an opportunity—if Elly May enters and wins, the Clampetts will be out of Beverly Hills for a while. She pushes the idea, hoping for a temporary escape from their hillbilly ways. Back at the mansion, Jethro, still convinced there’s more oil to be found, starts digging in another spot and once again hits oil. Seeing all the digging, Drysdale jumps to the conclusion that the Clampetts are planning to bury their fortune in the backyard. He rushes to Granny, pitching the security benefits of storing money in the bank vault, but Granny misunderstands, thinking he’s offering the vault as her new root cellar.
At the same time, Miss Jane suggests to Jed that Elly should run for Queen of Beverly Hills, unaware of Margaret’s ulterior motives. The Clampetts, misunderstanding the nature of the contest, believe it’s an actual footrace, leading Granny to declare her intention to compete as well. Drysdale scrambles to convince Candy to drop out while Miss Jane gently persuades Granny to step aside. When Robert Cummings, the contest announcer, announces the finalists, Elly and Candy are the top contenders. However, Drysdale announces that Candy has withdrawn, but to keep her happy, the bank will still sponsor her trip around the world. In a surprising twist, Miss Jane is selected to take Candy’s place in the contest. Always kindhearted, Elly declares that she’d rather see Miss Jane win the title. But in the final announcement, the judges award the crown to fellow contestant Karen Crandall, leaving everyone—including the Clampetts—more confused than ever.
