Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition that causes pain and stiffness in the shoulder joint Symptoms: Pain that worsens over time, followed by stiffness that limits movement. In severe cases, the shoulder may be immobile.
Causes: Inflammation of the shoulder joint capsule, which can lead to scarring and restricted movement. It can be caused by injury or immobilization of the shoulder.
Risk factors: Most common in women between the ages of 40 and 70, and associated with other medical conditions such as diabetes, hypothyroidism, and hyperthyroidism.
Diagnosis: Based on a physical exam and patient history. Imaging studies, such as X-rays, may be used to rule out other causes.
Treatment: Pain can be treated with NSAIDs and steroid injections. Physical therapy can improve motion. Hot and cold compresses can also help ease pain and swelling.
Recovery: It can take a few weeks to see progress, and up to 9 months to a year for complete recovery. If nonsurgical treatment is not effective, surgery may be recommended.
