In this short video, Jeni Kyuchukova, an expert at MentorMate, explains the differences between manual vs. automated testing. People create real user-scenarios to do manual testing. Then, they execute them against software in development. They do this to ensure that the software is ready for production and it’s not going to cause any errors that might prevent the end-users from working with the software. Automation testing consists of automated tests created by people. These tests are programs that are testing the software.

What’s the difference between manual vs. automated testing? The first difference is that we use manual testing to check if the software is looking nice and beautiful if it’s user-friendly. We use automated testing when we need to simulate something that requires a lot of people or efforts. For example, we will use automated testing when we want to do performance testing and make sure that the system will work with many users. We simulate these users with an automation script. We cannot achieve this test with manual testing because we will need thousands of people, not cost-effective.

Manual testing can sometimes take less time than automated testing. We can test something for five minutes rather than write a script that might take hours. However, automated tests return their investment because when you automate a significant amount of tests and run them, it takes less time.

Which one is better? The answer is that there is no such competition. Manual testing and automated testing go hand in hand.
