Project Tiger completed 50 years as it was on April 1, 1973, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi launched the flagship conservation program. IUCN has recognized two tiger subspecies, commonly referred to as the continental tiger (Panthera tigris Tigris) and the Sunda island tiger, found in Sumatra (Panthera tigris spondaic). The continental tigers currently include the Bengal, Malayan, Indochinese, and Amur (Siberian) tiger populations. The South China tiger is believed to be functionally extinct.
