STORYLINE:
Bike enthusiasts gathered in Kentucky on Wednesday to race high-wheel bikes, unusual bicycles which are also known as Ordinary bikes or Penny-Farthings.
The race in a Louisville park capped off a week-long meeting of the national Wheelmen group who collect and ride old bikes, many from the 19th century.
"The Wheelmen are dedicated to preserving the knowledge and collecting old bicycles from 1817 to 1917. And so not only do we try to collect everything and learn about it, we also try to use it," explained Carson Torpey, a member of Kentucky Wheelmen in Louisville.
The high wheel bikes are tall and have no air in the tyres, rough brakes and little cushioning for the riders, but they can travel at high speeds.
Torpey admits, "It's a rough ride, even with the saddle having some spring and flexing of the spokes, it's still a rough ride."
"You feel the bumps," he said.
The men and women racers, young and old, biked for an hour and the rider with the most laps claimed the win.
The odd-looking bikes were popular with the upper class at the turn of the century in America and England.
When they were introduced in the 1880s, they were so expensive that only rich members of society could afford them.
