Alphonse Gabriel Capone, better known as Al Capone, was born on January 17, 1899, in Brooklyn, New York 🇺🇸. His family, originally from southern Italy 🇮🇹, was part of the massive wave of Italian immigrants seeking a better life in the United States during the early 20th century. Al’s early life in Brooklyn was shaped by poverty and the harsh realities of immigrant life, and by age 14, he was expelled from school for striking a female teacher 🚸. This marked the end of his formal education, and he soon found himself immersed in the criminal underworld.
Capone began working for local gangs in Brooklyn and Manhattan, eventually joining the notorious Five Points Gang 💥. By 1917, he worked for Frankie Yale, a powerful racketeer. It was during this time that Capone earned his infamous nickname, “Scarface” 😈, after a violent altercation in which he was left with permanent scars on his face. Although Capone was deeply embarrassed by the scars, he fabricated a story about them being war wounds from World War I, despite never serving in the military 🎖️.
Capone’s criminal career skyrocketed after his rise through the ranks of organized crime, eventually becoming the leader of a powerful syndicate in Chicago 🇨🇭. His ruthless control over the bootlegging 🍸, gambling 🎲, and prostitution industries made him the most infamous gangster of the Prohibition era. Capone's influence grew, earning him the title of “Public Enemy Number One” 💀. Despite his violent and criminal nature, Capone valued family loyalty 👨👩👦, as seen in his relationship with his wife, Mary Coughlin, and their son, Albert. His story continues to captivate as a symbol of the rise of organized crime in America 🕵️♂️.
